Town Hall
The town hall consisted of each presidential and vice presidential candidate facing five minutes of questioning in the center of the room regarding the issues in America. First in the center of the room were Kerry and Sam, many of the questions directed toward this team dealt with education. One of the most prominent questions asked dealing with education, was how do they plan to keep teachers in classrooms. In order to do so they plan to make curriculum less structured toward tests and allow more teaching freedoms to let teachers do their job how they want, making it clear on how and not what. If teachers taught what they want it could be detrimental to test scores. When Sal and Alec were faced with questions the first question asked was how they would decrease the dropout rate. Their plan to decrease the rate of dropouts is by creating a more comforting environment which would allow for the students to prosper and perhaps give incentive to apply themselves. When asked how they would decrease the cost of higher education, their plan was unclear however they stated that their plan in bringing big businesses back to America would provide more jobs. Ultimately decreasing the rate of low income families, this would help these families access money for college. Lindsey and Emily were questioned heavily on the economy; they continue to hold their stance on cutting the common core program claiming that it is wasteful spending. When asked how they would handle the federal deficit their plan is to decrease unemployment rates and raise the minimum wage as well as taxes for the rich. When asked how they would fund their five billion dollar plan to implement cameras in classrooms Alex and Charlie answered with the solution to decrease small business taxes which would create more cash flow in the economy. In order to make college more affordable their plan is to make aid and scholarships more accessible, as well as for students with low performance because they deserve higher education as well. Last in the center of the room to face a round of questions were Laiba and Shu Xin. The first question they were asked was what would they do in order to accommodate special needs children in the common core. Other than allotting extra time for these students their plan was unclear and did not seem to have a truly fair solution. One statement made was that her plans seem to be a one way street, would this be how it is if she were in office? Her response was an apology if she had appeared to come off that way, adding that this was not a good leadership quality and she is open to compromise and building on ideas.
Final Comments
Kerry and Sam performed the best in the town hall even because when they faced questions they answered clearly with understandable solutions, other than dodging the question and just going off topic. Their information was relevant and informative. We recognize that candidate was knowledgeable and presented him or herself with confidence.
Throughout the whole election it is difficult to decide who brought the best research and put forth the most effort, because during every event each team never failed to come well prepared. However when forced to make the decision the one candidate who stood out the most was Alex Pekoff. The reasoning behind this was his teams preparation as a whole, it was clear that each member played a vital role. They had solid ideas that appeared to be well thought out and participated asking good questions in the Q and A sessions.
Each team did an outstanding job and we highly reccommend to do further research by rewatching campaign videos/visiting team websites and twitters in order to form your own opinions and make the right vote!
